A police officer and two civilians were killed and nine others wounded on Friday when a man opened fire inside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Five of the injured are police officers. The suspected gunman, 57-year-old Robert Lewis Dear, surrendered to police after a five-hour standoff that sent workers and patrons in neighboring business scrambling for cover.
Authorities received a call of shots fired from inside the Planned Parenthood around 11:30 a.m. local time, and that the suspect was armed with a “long gun.” A separate law enforcement source told NBC News that the suspect wielded an AK-47-style weapon. A police spokeswoman said the gunman was carrying “items of concern” when he entered the building. The gunman’s motivation has not been revealed.
